Pelleting and granulation in the chemical industry

Powdered products cause trouble at every step. They raise dust, are hard to dose, segregate during transport and take up more storage space than necessary. Amandus Kahl supplies equipment for pelleting, granulating, coating and drying powdered and bulk chemical products.

WHY PELLET

Nine things that change

Moving from powder to pellets is not cosmetics. It changes the behaviour of the product across the whole chain, from dosing to delivery to the customer.

EQUIPMENT

What we supply for this branch

Kahl flat die press in a pharmaceutical version, made of stainless steel

Flat die presses

Kahl has been building flat die presses for more than 40 years. The 33 series is specially adapted to the requirements of the chemical industry. Type 33–390 has been running there for over twenty years. The combination of die and rollers sets the diameter, length, bulk density, hardness and surface structure of the pellet.

Fluid bed plant for drying, coating and agglomeration

Fluid bed technology

Particles float in a stream of air while being dried, coated or agglomerated at the same time. Continuous processes with top and bottom spraying are used for instant products and granulates suitable for tabletting. Batch operation gives more freedom when many recipes are produced in varying quantities.

Kahl ROTOSPRAY with rotary nozzle for micro-atomising liquid additives

ROTOSPRAY® for micro-atomising

The rotary nozzle atomises one millilitre of liquid into ten million droplets, and the distribution of the solids flow ensures the product is sprayed from all sides. Without dilution, without liquid residue and without any risk of clogging. Used for enzymes, disinfectants, vitamins, flavours, vegetable oils, organic acids and dust binders.

Kahl continuous channel dryer and cooler

Dryers, coolers and mixers

Continuous channel dryers and coolers handle ground material, pellets, briquettes, square-shaped materials, loose, sticky and powdered products, and can dry and cool at the same time. Alongside them come a high-speed mixer and a continuous mixer for preparing the mix before pressing.

Alongside the above we also supply all conveying equipment, silos, bins, cyclones, filters, vibrating screens, electrical equipment and more.

TECHNICAL PARAMETERS

Press types for the chemical industry

Pellet diameter 0.8–20 mm. The types differ in die diameter and number of rollers. The choice depends on the product and the required throughput.

Type Die Ø Rollers Ø / width Number of rollers Roller speed Motor
14–175175 mm130 / up to 27 mm20.5–0.8 m/s3 kW
25–500500 mm230 / up to 75 mm41.7 m/s36 kW
33–390390 mm230 / up to 75 mm22.5 m/s15–30 kW
33–500500 mm230 / up to 75 mm32.5 m/s15–30 kW
33–600600 mm230 / up to 75 mm3–52.5 m/s15–30 kW
38–600600 mm280 / up to 100 mm3–42.5 m/s55–90 kW

For pharmaceutical applications, type 14–175 is used for dry granulation of the tablet mass before tabletting. Pelleting keeps the mixture homogeneous and reduces dust emission.

FLUID BED

Six fluid bed processes

Agglomeration

Joining fine particles into larger, more readily soluble granules.

Coating

Applying a protective or functional layer onto the particle.

Drying

Removing moisture while the particles float continuously in a stream of air.

Microencapsulation

Enclosing the active substance in a shell for controlled release.

Spray drying with agglomeration

Drying and joining in a single pass, typical for instant products.

Spray granulation

Building the granule layer by layer to the required size and density.
